In a world where technological advancements and scientific developments are reshaping various dimensions of human life at an unprecedented pace, more than ever before, modern humanity faces a silent yet profound crisis called the crisis of meaning. This crisis has nothing to do with scarce resources or medical equipment but rather spiritual emptiness, existential anxiety, and identity confusion. In such circumstances, the concept of spiritual health emerges as a missing link in the framework of well-being, occupying a fundamental position—a concept that, alongside physical, mental, and social health, forms the fourth pillar of human health

Background and Objective: Schools are the main educational institutions that play a key role in developing human resources and shaping the social and economic future of countries. In this context, the effective performance of teachers is of particular importance, and religious spirituality can influence teachers' behaviors and performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of religious spirituality on teachers' self-efficacy in Islamic education schools in Mashhad.

Methods: This research is a quantitative research type and its method is descriptive-correlational. This study involved 135 teachers from Islamic knowledge schools in Mashhad (2023–2024), selected through convenience sampling. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 27. Instruments included the Religious Spirituality Questionnaire (Milliman et al., 2003), assessing meaning, connection, and value alignment, and the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (Schunk et al., 2001), measuring engagement, instructional strategies, and classroom management. Both instruments demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. In the present study, all ethical considerations were observed and the authors reported no conflict of interests.

Results: The results of the study revealed high mean scores for religious spirituality among teachers, and a significant positive correlation between religious spirituality and teachers' self-efficacy. Statistical analyses revealed that as the level of religious spirituality increased, teachers' self-efficacy also significantly improved. In other words, religious spirituality serves as a facilitating factor that can contribute to fostering self-efficacy and confidence in teachers.

Conclusion: The findings of this research suggest that enhancing religious spirituality can help improve teachers' professional performance and, consequently, have a positive impact on students' learning outcomes. It is recommended that educational policymakers and school administrators seek strategies to promote religious spirituality in educational settings. This initiative could lead to improved educational quality and a more positive classroom atmoshere.

https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.47072

Background and Objective: Spiritual intelligence has been found to be a crucial factor in enhancing marital satisfaction. Therefore, the objective of this research was to develop a conceptual model of spouses’ spiritual intelligence based on the Quran and Hadith.

Methods: To develop the spiritual intelligence model, the thematic analysis method was employed for data collection. The study population comprised the Quran, authentic collections of Hadith (e.g., al-Kulayni’s al-Kafi, al-Tusi’s Tahdhib, and al-Tusi’s al-Istibsar), and individual Hadiths with sound chains of transmission (isnad). Purposeful sampling approach was used. Subsequently, qualitative content analysis was applied to analyze the data, and its validity was confirmed through content validity assessed by eight experts holding PhDs in Psychology and Islamic sciences Level 4 in. Ultimately, a conceptual model of spiritual intelligence for spouses based on the Quran and Hadith was proposed. The authors reported no conflict of interests in this study.

Results: The research findings revealed that the spiritual intelligence model for spouses, based on the Quran and Hadith, consists of three main components and 11 sub-components:

  1. Spiritual Rationality (Purpose and Meaning in Life, Understanding the Reality of the World, Belief in the Hereafter, Self-awareness).
  2. Spiritual Experience and Positive Emotions (Feeling of Proximity to God, Love and Respect for the Spouse, Sense of Responsibility toward the Spouse).
  3. Spiritual Adaptability (Moral Self-regulation, Spiritual Self-discipline, Forgiveness, Problem Solving Skills).

Conclusion: The application of this model can serve as a foundation for designing educational programs, spiritual-marital interventions, and supporting spousal relationships through an integrative approach combining religious and scientific perspectives. This study establishes a framework for future research in the intersection of marital dynamics, spiritual intelligence, and Islamic philosophy.

Journal of Pizhūhish dar dīn va Salāmat (i.e., Research on Religion & Health), Vol. 11 No. 2 (2025), 11 November 2025, Page 40-53
https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.47278

Background and Objective: Spiritual health, alongside physical, mental, and social health, is one of the four fundamental dimensions of health emphasized by the World Health Organization. Unmet spiritual needs are significant contributors to suicidal tendencies, and identifying these needs is critical for suicide prevention. This study aimed to design a spirituality-based therapeutic protocol centered on patience -a key spiritual need-derived from Quranic teachings.

Methods: This qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study was conducted in 2023 on 30 women aged 18-60 at Isfahan’s Khorshid Hospital, who had attempted suicide via poisoning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Concepts related to patience were extracted from the Quran and Tafsir al-Mizan (interpretation) using a model for deriving psychological concepts from religious texts. The protocol was reviewed and refined through a Delphi method based on expert input. In the present study, all ethical considerations were observed and the authors reported no conflicts of interest.

Results: The findings revealed unmet spiritual needs among participants, with patience identified as the second most frequent need. Drawing on the Quran, the protocol introduced concepts such as active patiencegraceful patience (ṣabr jamīl), and collective endurance (muṣābara) through seven structured sessions. Each session addressed a dimension of patience using Quranic principles and practical exercises to reinforce these traits.

Conclusion: This study demonstrates that integrating Quranic concepts into therapeutic interventions can enhance patients’ spiritual resilience and coping strategies. Spiritual-religious approach are useful and effective in improving spiritual health and reducing psychological distress.

Journal of Pizhūhish dar dīn va Salāmat (i.e., Research on Religion & Health), Vol. 11 No. 2 (2025), 11 November 2025, Page 54-66
https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.47179

Background and Objective: Family, as the most fundamental social institution, plays a crucial role in shaping individuals' personalities and their psychological and social well-being. Religious and existential health within families, by strengthening interpersonal relationships, enhancing family cohesion, and promoting resilience, contributes significantly to individuals' capacity to cope with life’s challenges and adversities. This is particularly important in families exposed to greater occupational and social pressures, such as those of physicians and office employees. The aim of this study was to model the characteristics of religious and existential health in specialist doctors and employees in Tehran.

Methods: The research method is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive survey-based in terms of data collection. The statistical population of the study included specialist doctors and employees in Tehran. Due to the unavailability of all community members, they were selected by random sampling according to Morgan's table, and they answered the Paloutzian and Ellison’s (1982) Spiritual Health Questionnaire manually. In the present study, all ethical considerations were observed and the authors reported no conflict of interests.

Results: The results of the pairwise comparison, to investigate the difference in spiritual health scores among doctors and employees, showed a significant difference between the average religious health scores of doctors and employees. The results showed that the level of religious health of employees was higher than that of doctors. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the average existential health and the existential health was higher in the doctors compared to the employees.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that as religious well-being increases, existential well-being is also positively affected. This relationship may stem from the positive effects of religiosity on existential feelings, which can be influenced by the high levels of job stress and responsibilities faced by physicians-factors that potentially impact their mental and spiritual health.

A Phenomenological Study of the Islamic Spiritual Health Definition

Maryam Safara, Samaneh Sadat Sadidpour

Journal of Pizhūhish dar dīn va Salāmat (i.e., Research on Religion & Health), Vol. 11 No. 2 (2025), 11 November 2025, Page 67-78
https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.40734

Background and Objective: In theory, spiritual health is so important that it has been determined as the fourth dimension of health by the World Health Organization. But there are still challenges for five decades in defining it.

Methods: The research approach was qualitative and descriptive phenomenological. The sample population of the study included experts in the field of spiritual health and psychological specialists who were active in the discussion of spiritual health. Purposeful sampling continued until data saturation was reached and finally 13 participants were selected. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and data analysis was done using the Colaizzi method. In the present study, all ethical considerations were observed and the authors reported no conflicts of interest.

Results: As a result of the data reduction process, 103 codes, 31 initial concepts, six sub-categories, and three main categories including Islam-centered health, Material-centered health, and indefinability of spiritual health were identified. The Islam-centered health category consists of three sub-categories: balance, holistic transcendence, and the human as both material and immaterial. Meanwhile, the material-centered spiritual health category includes two sub-categories: Transient tranquility and the human as purely material.

Conclusion: The results of data analysis reveals that Islam-centered spiritual health and material-centered spiritual health represent two distinct paradigms of spiritual well-being. Islam-centered spiritual health focuses on human balance and transcendence, guiding individuals toward both material and spiritual fulfillment. It seeks to elevate humans to the pinnacle of spirituality, enabling them to pursue inner and outer spiritual growth while living a material existence. Achieving this balance and lasting tranquility is contingent upon getting close to Allah, which is only possible through submission to the do's and don'ts of Islamic teachings (Sharia).

Mahdi Besharat

Journal of Pizhūhish dar dīn va Salāmat (i.e., Research on Religion & Health), Vol. 11 No. 2 (2025), 11 November 2025, Page 79-92
https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.47165

Background and Objective: In today’s world, marked by increasing complexities and daily life pressures, the importance of spiritual health as a key dimension of overall human well-being has become more prominent. Religious beliefs form the foundation of spiritual life; without sound convictions, human actions lack direction and purpose. This article aims to explore the belief-based dimensions of spiritual health from a Quranic perspective and offer solutions for enhancing both individual and communal spiritual well-being based on these teachings.

Methods: This study employs a library-based method, relying on the Quran and Islamic sources, and uses a descriptive-analytical approach to examine and interpret the gathered data. The author reported no conflict of interests in this study.

Results: According to Quranic teachings, the core beliefs that significantly impact spiritual health include:

- Belief in monotheism (tawhid): It provides purpose and meaning to life, fosters inner peace, liberates individuals from subjugation to non-divine entities, and contributes to a cohesive spiritual identity;

- Belief in resurrection (ma‘ad): It strengthens spiritual security, offers comfort during hardship, and encourages ethical and responsible living;

- Belief in prophethood (nubuwwah): It places humans on the path of divine guidance and promotes spiritual growth through emulation of prophetic examples;

- Belief in divine justice (adl-e ilahi): It instills peace and trust, reinforces hope and motivation, and enhances resilience in the face of life’s difficulties.

Conclusion: Religious beliefs play a vital role in promoting spiritual health, empowering individuals to live meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling lives. These beliefs establish a deep and holistic worldview that fosters hope and tranquility amid adversity while strengthening spiritual resilience. In light of today’s widespread spiritual crises, paying attention to the Quran’s belief system offers an effective and transformative path toward achieving spiritual well-being.

Journal of Pizhūhish dar dīn va Salāmat (i.e., Research on Religion & Health), Vol. 11 No. 2 (2025), 11 November 2025, Page 93-111
https://doi.org/10.22037/jrrh.v11i2.47244

Background and Objective: The Quran-based spiritual health is a new approach in the studies of spiritual health, which has been manifested in the form of Quranic concepts such as cultivation, good life, piety and peace, and its scope includes the worlds of the unseen and the intuitive as well. One of the areas affected by this approach is the family and spiritual needs of couples, which has a positive effect on improving their quality of life. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of satisfying spiritual needs of spouses in improving their quality of life from the perspective of this approach.

Methods: The present research method is a combination of review and analytical research, the information of which was collected using library sources and through manual and electronic receipt taking. First, by reviewing domestic studies in this field, factors affecting the spiritual needs of spouses were extracted and categorized, and in the next step, Quranic evidence and indicators related to each of the factors were presented and analyzed based on the Quran-based spiritual health approach. The authors of the article reported no conflicts of interest.

Results: The findings resulted in a tripartite categorization of the factors influencing the fulfillment of spouses' spiritual needs: beliefs, ethics and values, and social culture and relations. Belief-related factors, by influencing the human cognitive system in four dimensions -self, existence, origin, and purpose- ethical and value-based factors, focusing on reducing moral deficiencies, strengthening spiritual support for spouses, and reforming gender-based concepts, and social factors, emphasizing comprehensive spiritual education, enhancing social status, regulating intra-family emotions, and strengthening prayer-centered spiritual connection, all play a positive role in meeting the spiritual needs of spouses.

Conclusion: The findings of the present study underscore the significance of addressing the spiritual needs of couples and its substantial impact on improving their quality of life. The study demonstrates that paying attention to these needs, guided by the teachings of the Quran, can contribute to the realization of a meaningful life.
