Abstract
Background and Objective: Spiritual health, alongside physical, mental, and social health, is one of the four fundamental dimensions of health emphasized by the World Health Organization. Unmet spiritual needs are significant contributors to suicidal tendencies, and identifying these needs is critical for suicide prevention. This study aimed to design a spirituality-based therapeutic protocol centered on patience -a key spiritual need-derived from Quranic teachings.
Methods: This qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study was conducted in 2023 on 30 women aged 18-60 at Isfahan’s Khorshid Hospital, who had attempted suicide via poisoning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Concepts related to patience were extracted from the Quran and Tafsir al-Mizan (interpretation) using a model for deriving psychological concepts from religious texts. The protocol was reviewed and refined through a Delphi method based on expert input. In the present study, all ethical considerations were observed and the authors reported no conflicts of interest.
Results: The findings revealed unmet spiritual needs among participants, with patience identified as the second most frequent need. Drawing on the Quran, the protocol introduced concepts such as active patience, graceful patience (ṣabr jamīl), and collective endurance (muṣābara) through seven structured sessions. Each session addressed a dimension of patience using Quranic principles and practical exercises to reinforce these traits.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates that integrating Quranic concepts into therapeutic interventions can enhance patients’ spiritual resilience and coping strategies. Spiritual-religious approach are useful and effective in improving spiritual health and reducing psychological distress.
