Structural Equation Modeling of Social Skills Based on Parenting Style and Cultural Capital (A Comparison of Public and Private Schools in Tabriz)

Abstract
Background and Aim: Social skills are learned and socially approved behaviors that facilitate interactions with others, enhance quality of life and play a crucial role in effective communication and social acceptance. The aim of this study was to develop a structural equation model of social skills based on parenting styles and cultural capital.
Methods: The research employed a survey method. The statistical population consisted of all high school students in public and private schools in District 4 of Tabriz. The sample size was determined to be 750 individuals using Cochran’s formula. A multistage stratified sampling method was used, with random selection from each stratum. To measure the variables, standardized questionnaires were utilized, including the Matson Social Skills Questionnaire (1983), Baumrind’s Parenting Style Questionnaire (1973), Bennett’s Questionnaire (2005) and Sullivan’s Questionnaire (2001). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for model evaluation.
Ethical Considerations: In writing and compiling this article, ethical principles, including maintaining the authenticity of texts, honesty and integrity and obtaining informed consent, were upheld.
Results: The results indicated that the fit indices of the conceptual model were at an acceptable level and the evaluated model had a good fit with the data. The goodness-of-fit indices for the structural model of social skills showed that the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) was 0.079, which falls within the normal range. Additionally, the goodness-of-fit index (GFI), adjusted goodness-of-fit index (AGFI), incremental fit index (IFI), comparative fit index (CFI) and normed fit index (NFI) were all above 0.9, indicating a reasonable fit. The chi-square value was 175.8, confirming the suitability of the social skills structural model and the overall good fit of the proposed model.
Conclusion: Overall, cultural capital influences the cognitive and behavioral changes in parents, which in turn are reflected in their parenting styles and the development of their children’s social skills.
