Evaluation of the use of honey bee products in prevention and treatment of depression in women (review)

Abstract

Background and Aim: Depression is a mood disorder that includes boredom, inactivity, and apathy. It can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings, happiness and health. People with depression may experience feelings of unhappiness, anxiety, emptiness, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, shame, or restlessness. Depressed people may also lose interest in enjoyable past activities; They have trouble to remembering details and making decisions, have trouble in their relationships, and think about suicide or similar behaviors. On the other hand, sadness is one of the important emotional symptoms that is described in traditional medicine as the gradual movement of the soul which inwards and is one of the main criteria for depression.

Materials and Methods: This study, which is a library review, is evaluating the methods of preventing depression based on the principles of health that mentioned in Iranian traditional medicine and foreign references by using the honeybee products including honey and royal jelly.

Findings: Honey bee products have long time background and important role in the prevention or treatment of mental illness in the prescriptions of Iranian traditional medicine. Honey has been used to warm the mind and relieve depression, royal jelly has been used to relieve premenstrual boredom and pollen has been used to relieve low memory due to depression.

Ethical Considerations: From the beginning to the end of the article, the principle of honesty and trustworthiness has been observed.

Conclusion: All The references of traditional and modern medicine confirms that bee products such as honey and royal jelly, both physiologically and temperamentally, have the ability to reduce the effects of depression in women.
