Abstract

Background and Aim:Functional movement screen (FMS) test  is used in different sports and populations to identify alterations and asymmetries in basic movement patterns. However, no study has investigated the gender differences of this test in in physical education and sports science students. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the gender differences in the functional movement screen  test in in physical education and sports science students.

Materials and Methods: 344 physical education and sports science students (175 men and 169 women) with an average age of 23.39 years participated in this cross-sectional study. The screening test of functional movements includes seven functional movement tasks deep squat, hurdle step, inline lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight-leg raise, trunk stability push-up and rotary stability, which the subjects were evaluated in this test. Data analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney test for non-parametric data and independent t test for parametric data at a significance level of 0.05.

Results: The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference in the scores of the shoulder mobility test, trunk stability push-up, rotary stability and active straight-leg raise between men and women (P<0.05), but no significant difference was observed in the deep squat, hurdle step and inline lunge tests (P<0.05). Also, the results of the independent t-test for the overall score of the FMS test did not show a significant difference between men and women (P<0.05).

Conclusion: The results of this research showed that there is a significant difference in four of the seven FMS indicators between male and female student athletes, while there is no significant difference between their overall scores. Also, the use of more specialized screening tests can be effective and beneficial in preventing sports injuries.
