Abstract

Background and Aim: Dust pollution is one of the most important environmental and health challenges in the steelmaking industry, which in addition to reducing the quality of the workplace air, has adverse consequences on employee health, the environment, production efficiency, and operating costs. Selecting the appropriate technology for dust control requires simultaneous evaluation of technical, economic, environmental, and administrative criteria; a matter that cannot be done well with single-criteria methods. The aim of this study was to prioritize methods for reducing industrial dust pollution in the steelmaking industry using the AHP-TOPSIS hybrid model.

Methods: In this study, first, the relative importance of decision-making criteria was determined using the analytic hierarchy process, and then different dust control options were ranked using the TOPSIS method. Also, in order to assess the stability of the results, a sensitivity analysis was performed by changing the weight of the main criteria.

Results: The results showed that dust removal efficiency was the most important decision-making criterion and bag filter was recognized as the most appropriate dust control technology; after that, local exhaust ventilation system and electrofilter were ranked next. The results of sensitivity analysis also showed that conventional changes in the weights of the criteria did not have a significant impact on the final ranking of the options, indicating the stability of the proposed model.

Conclusion: The findings of this study can provide a scientific and practical framework for selecting dust control technologies, improving environmental performance, improving occupational safety and health, and supporting decision-making of steel industry managers.
