The Journal of Dental School accepts submissions that have previously been made available as preprints provided that they have not undergone peer review. A preprint is a draft version of a paper made available online before submission to a journal. Preprints allow for the public sharing of research prior to formal peer review and journal publication, facilitating timely collaboration and feedback within the scientific community. Below are our guidelines on handling preprints:

    • Definition of Preprints: A preprint is a version of a research paper that is made publicly available via a preprint server before undergoing formal peer review. Preprint servers are increasingly common across various disciplines and allow researchers to share their work early. The Journal of Dental School welcomes the submission of manuscripts that have been posted on recognized preprint platforms, as long as they adhere to our submission and formatting guidelines.
    • Submission of Preprints: Authors may submit manuscripts that have already been made available on a preprint server. Posting a paper on a preprint platform does not disqualify it from consideration at the Journal of Dental School. However, this does not guarantee that the manuscript will be sent for peer review. Authors should disclose the preprint’s DOI and URL at the time of submission to ensure transparency. We also request that authors update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article, if accepted. Posting a manuscript as a preprint does not conflict with its later publication in the Journal of Dental School. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the preprint does not cause issues with copyright or exclusivity agreements.
    • Revisions and Updates: Authors are free to revise preprints based on feedback received either prior to or after submission to the Journal of Dental School. If substantial changes are made to the preprint version, they should be disclosed following our journal’s submission guidelines. Once an article has been accepted and published, authors can keep the preprint version available on the server, provided they link it to the final published version.
    • Licensing Implications: Authors should retain copyright ownership of their work when posting to a preprint server. Preprints should be posted under licenses that restrict reuse . If a preprint has been published under a CC-BY (-NC/-NC-ND) license, the Journal of Dental School will still consider it for publication.
    • Citation and DOI Assignment: We encourage researchers to properly cite preprints as part of their references. If a preprint has been assigned a DOI, the Journal of Dental School will assign a new DOI to the final published article, and both can be cross-referenced. We follow industry standards such as CrossRef’s guidelines, which ensure that preprints are linked to the final published versions.
    • Ethical and Transparency Considerations: Authors must comply with ethical standards when posting preprints, including proper attribution of prior work, transparency in authorship, and adherence to general research ethics. Posting a preprint does not compromise the integrity of the peer review process at the Journal of Dental School.
