Abstract
Background and Aim: Background and Aim: The stability of marital interactions and the dynamics of couples' relationships significantly influence mental health and the durability of their partnerships. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of mindfulness in marital relationships and sensitivity to rejection in the association between differentiation of self and the stability of marital interactions.
Methods: This study employed a descriptive-correlational design within the framework of structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of married individuals residing in Tehran, and a total of 867 participants were selected through convenience sampling. The study utilized the Marital Interaction Stability Questionnaire (1991), Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ) (1996), and Differentiation of Self-Inventory–Short Form (DSI-SH) (2011). Data analysis was conducted using descriptive indicators and model fit assessments via SPSS 21 and AMOS 24 software.
Ethical Considerations: The study adhered to ethical principles, ensuring the confidentiality and anonymity of participant information. Furthermore, no potential harm or risk was posed to the participants during the research process.
Results: Findings showed that Differentiation of self and sensitivity to rejection have a negative relationship with the stability of marital interactions (0.24 and -0.26 respectively). While mindfulness in the marital relationship has a positive relationship with the stability of marital interactions (0.72, P<0.01); Also, the findings showed that mindfulness in marital relationship and sensitivity to rejection play a mediating role in the relationship between Differentiation of self and stability of marital interactions (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Individuals with higher levels of differentiation of self exhibit lower sensitivity to perceived rejection. This reduced sensitivity to rejection, in turn, contributes to more stable marital interactions. The negative relationship between differentiation of self and sensitivity to rejection, along with the negative relationship between sensitivity to rejection and marital stability, indicates that the effect of differentiation of self on marital stability is, at least partially, mediated through its influence on sensitivity to rejection.
