Bioethics is a field of study that systematically examines the ethical challenges arising from the application of innovations and advancements in the life sciences and medicine within an interdisciplinary framework. It aims to regulate and coordinate the relationship between new biological technologies and human behavioral norms, organizing the imperatives within this domain. The scope of bioethics includes the study and evaluation of the interaction between the effects and consequences of applying new biomedical technologies in human life and ethical principles and standards. These technologies and advancements, which constitute the domain and topics of bioethics, can be classified into four main areas:
- Life-sustaining technologies at the beginning and end of life
- Life-enhancing technologies for improving the quality of life
- Reproductive technologies, particularly cloning
- Technologies related to genetic engineering, gene therapy, and the human genome
In addition, leveraging the general concept of bioethics, another priority in this field is to study the developments of social phenomena and the transformed human relationships in contemporary times across various political, economic, cultural, familial, and other spheres, from the perspective of how ethical elements impact human life.
