The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT and other large language models, into scholarly writing is increasingly common. While these tools can assist in various aspects of manuscript preparation, their use raises important considerations regarding authorship, transparency, and ethical responsibility.

Authorship Attribution
In accordance with the guidelines set forth by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), AI tools cannot be credited as authors. AI entities lack the capacity to take responsibility for the integrity of the work, approve the final manuscript, understand conflicts of interest, or hold copyright .

Transparency in AI Utilization
Authors who employ AI tools in the development of their manuscripts must disclose this usage clearly and comprehensively. The disclosure should include:
•The name, version, and source of the AI tool used.
•The specific purpose for which the AI tool was utilized (e.g., drafting text, editing, data analysis).
•The prompts or queries are input into the AI tool.
•The date(s) of AI tool usage.

This information should be provided in the Methods section of the manuscript and, if applicable, in the Acknowledgments. Such transparency aligns with the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) recommendations and supports the integrity of the scholarly record.

Author Responsibility
Human authors bear full responsibility for the content of their manuscripts, including any material generated with the assistance of AI tools. This encompasses ensuring the accuracy of the information presented, the originality of the content, and the appropriate attribution of all sources. Authors must be vigilant in reviewing AI-generated content to prevent the inclusion of plagiarized material or inaccuracies.
By adhering to these guidelines, authors contribute to the ethical and transparent use of AI in scholarly publishing, upholding the standards of Archives of Men’s Health and the broader academic community.
