Abstract

Abstract

Background and purpose: Patients with COVID-19 are at high risk of nosocomial bacterial and fungal infections due to risk factors such as hospitalization in the intensive care unit, mechanical ventilation and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Data on the colonization of Candida species in patients with COVID-19 are very limited.

Material and method: A 57-year-old woman with diabetes and hypertension with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to COVID-19 infection referred to the emergency department of Dr. Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran and after a long hospital stay in the intensive care unit and Several courses of antibiotic therapy with COVID-19 treatment protocol and mechanical ventilation, with candida colonization and antifungal therapy, despite partial satisfactory treatment, the patient died of cardiac arrest.

Conclusion: Candida species are the second most common fungal genus identified in fungal lung infections that affect hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Diabetes and COVID-19 are usually present as risk factors for fungal infections during a hospitalization. Because the widespread use of antibiotics and corticosteroids significantly predisposes a patient to fungal colonization and increased fungal load, which can lead to fungal infections. Therefore, early anti-fungal treatment and control of the source of colonization or infection can be one of the most important interventions to reduce the fungal load, which will bring better results with earlier treatment.
